Installation
- 1 Download the .dmg above.
- 2 Open it and drag ORBIS to Applications.
- 3 Launch ORBIS — allow microphone access when prompted.
- 4 First launch downloads and installs the runtime; choosing on-device speech adds its voice models. Allow about 3 GB and a few minutes, with an internet connection. A local language model needs additional disk space.
- 5 The setup wizard walks through your mic, your voice, and connecting a language model.
- 6 When voice is ready, double-click the orb and ask “What can you do?” to have your first conversation.
ORBIS brings the voice. You bring the model.
Choose on-device speech during setup to hear with Parakeet and speak with Kokoro. The language model is yours to choose: run one locally or connect a hosted provider before your first conversation. Hosted speech, language models, and remote agents receive the data you send to them.
- — Built-in (MLX) — download a language model to run inside ORBIS on your Apple Silicon Mac. Allow roughly 2.5 GB more for the suggested model.
- — Ollama — the wizard can help install it and download a model, or connect to your existing Ollama or LM Studio server.
- — Other local servers — enter the URL for your vLLM or OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
- — Any OpenAI-compatible API — paste the URL and your key.
Want your orb to do substantial work?
Conversation works with your chosen language model. Delegation also needs a running agent: the default protoAgent hub is a separately managed local service. Start it before asking ORBIS to hand off a task, or add an agent you already use in Settings. Connect an agent →

ORBIS is Mac-only for now
ORBIS is a native Apple-Silicon Mac app today. We want it everywhere — iPhone, iPad, Windows, and Linux are all on the table, and the more people ask for a platform, the sooner it ships.
